Hello friends!
You all know how passionate I am about health coaching and how much of a GAMER CHANGER having a coach can be! However, coaching itself is such a truly transformative experience. If you think that you would benefit from a whole life makeover, I want to give you another option featuring someone I trust and love dearly. And that is my beautiful cousin Emmy!

So without further adieu, let’s get into the interview!
Valerie: One of the big topics these days is the need to take better care of ourselves. The term self-care has become very popular in our culture at present. What does self-care look like for you?
Emmy: For me the most important thing is to spend time alone at some point during the day. I enjoy staying in silence. Also working out at least 3 times a week and having 8 hours of sleep. Those are the most important!
Valerie: Why do you think it’s so important to take that alone time? Why do you think it is so hard for people to do it?
Emmy: When you are alone, you can’t run from the truth; the truth, your truth, is within you and can’t be ignored when you are alone. And some of this truth is hard to accept hard to face especially when it comes to things that we don’t like about ourselves; habits, behaviors, patterns that we should change. It is scary, it is heartbreaking. But only the truth will set us free!
Valerie: It definitely can be tough to face what we don’t like about ourselves. As a result, a lot of people struggle with trying to truly love themselves. When we have serious things we need to change, it can be difficult to still love yourself in the transition. Do you have any advice on finding self-love through the process?
Emmy: The first thing to know is that we cannot change everything. Some facets of our personality, some weaknesses are inherent to who we are. The desire to change must be triggered by our self-love, our desire to become better and not by the lack of love for ourselves. So, change what is changeable and learn to love those imperfections that make us all unique beings.
Valerie: What do you have to say to that woman that cannot get past the imperfections? How does she pull herself out of that state of self-loathing?
Emmy: I give tough love as a coach. So, my first question is always, “So, are your looks all you’ve got to offer to this world?” And that triggers some kind of awakening. I do help the client accept their body, but I mostly help them discover their uniqueness, magic, etc. Our looks are really not the most important thing. It’s how we treat ourselves, the people around us, how kind, driven, positive we are.
Valerie: It is said that real change and true achievement starts in the mind and requires getting into the success mindset. What does it mean to you to have the right mindset? How does mindset play a role in success?
Emmy: What you think is what you believe and what you believe is what fuels you to work hard. My life changed when I started changing my mindset, when I started to allow myself to dream about all the things I wanted for myself. My self-love journey started blooming when I believed that I deserved all that I have now. Truthfully, I think everyone should intentionally train their mind to think positive…with time it will become a habit.
Valerie: What steps can you suggest someone take to retrain their brain to think positive? What advice do you have for people who have a mindset problem and are stuck in this initial phase of change?
Emmy: For me it’s all about training that brain. If someone has a negative mindset, it’s because their brain is used to finding the worst in everything. So, the first thing is to catch yourself when these bad thoughts come up and immediately shift your mindset. As an exercise I would ask the client to think about 3 positive things for every 1 bad thought. It’s hard at the beginning but with time it becomes automatic. I still use this exercise myself.
Valerie: There has been a major swift towards health and wellness, as well as the desire to take better care of ourselves from the inside out. What does wellness mean to you?
Emmy: To me wellness means taking care of the mind, body and soul. For a long time, I believed that one was more important than the others. The truth is true wellbeing is a combination of those 3 aspects.
Valerie: Why is this revolution so important? How can people adopt a mind, body, and soul approach to wellness?
Emmy: We have to first understand and accept that they are connected. Start by paying attention to everything you do, say, eat. Ask yourself everyday… How do I feel? How does my body feel? Did I sleep well? Was I agitated? How do I feel about this day? Am I overwhelmed, serene? Pay attention to your reactions, look for patterns. It all starts by paying attention to and better understanding yourself.
Valerie: One of the biggest struggles people have is staying motivated long enough to make effective change in their lives. How do you stay motivated?
Emmy: I know exactly the kind of person I want to become. I know I have to do work until I reach my full potential. It might take a lifetime and I’m okay with that.
Valerie: What advice do you have for those trying to stay motivated in times of low enthusiasm or hardship? How does someone sustain that feeling?
Emmy: Small steps. For example, you planned a 1-hour workout today, if you don’t feel motivated, force yourself to work out for at least 15 minutes. If you had 10 tasks to do, do 3. The trick is to ALWAYS push yourself to take SOME action. Also, it’s important to be able to pin point where the lack of motivation comes from, sometimes we have to take care of the source first.
You recently got certified to become a life coach. What made you decide to follow this path?
In 2012 I was diagnosed with depression and had to leave the U.S. and come back to Haiti where I am from. It was a really dark time in my life but also the most precious . I had to face my fears , face my reality , my flaws, and my self sabotage patterns. I spent a lot of time alone and started reading self help books. The book that really changed my life is “The Road Less Traveled” by Scott Peck. From there I really got into self development. I realized that I had the power to make changes, to create the life that I wanted, IF I DID THE WORK. I started to be happy again and I just wanted to share that with the world. Motivating my friends and family members became something I did even before I knew Life Coaching was an actual career. I know coaching is my calling and has given me purpose.
Valerie: You are currently growing your coaching practice. Can you explain what Life Coaching is?
Emmy: Life Coaching is a designed alliance between coach and client. The coaching relationship continually gives all the power back to you, the client. We believe that you know the answers to every question or challenge you may have in your life, even if those answers appear to be obscured, concealed, or hidden inside. I am like a person trainer for your mind.
Valerie: What are the benefits of having a life coach? Who is something like this for?
Emmy: Having a Life Coach is like having a personal cheerleader and motivator. It means having someone who believes in you but who will push you to do the work.
I work with:
- People who are feeling stuck and unfulfilled, but are not sure why
- People who are facing divorce, separation, illness, or a personal challenge they find difficult
- People who feel that their life’s purpose is something far afield from what they are doing today
- People who feel “there has to be more…?”
Valerie: As a life coach you obviously have a lot to offer in helping people live their best lives. What is your biggest advice to clients and individuals?
Emmy: Be authentic; get to know yourself and take care of yourself first. Allow self-love to be your compass in whatever you wish to accomplish.
Valerie: What do you say to someone who is feeling lost or unsure of themselves?
Emmy: It’s OK. That’s where growth comes from. Let’s work on it. Hire me as your coach!
